Hi everyone, my name is Piumi and this is my project about United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which is quality education.
United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education Ensure inclusive and equitable education and promote lifelong opportunities for all
Since I live in Australia, my project investigates the quality education in Australian context Being one of the wealthiest nations in the world, Australian people have every right to think that we are doing just perfect with our education system. How is Australia doing?
Target goal for this project Target 4.2 By 2030, ensure that all girls and boys have access to quality early childhood development, care and pre‑primary education so that they are ready for primary education. Indicator 4.2.2ALT - needs improvement What do Australia do well? 78% (over three quarter) of Australian children aged 4 – 5 years meet the early developmental milestone and achieve successful transition to school.
Problem The children who entre school show a wide diversity in their development Majority of children finding difficulties accessing quality education in the early years are those who have low socio-economic backgrounds, live in remote areas and Indigenous backgrounds.
Research Data
22% (approximately 68,000) of children aged 4 - 5-year-olds fail to transit into school successfully due to vulnerable or at risk on one or more developmental domains. 43% of Australian Indigenous children are not fully prepared for school which makes over two times more likely to be than non-indigenous children (43 per cent versus 21 per cent). Low socioeconomic background shows clear links to children not meeting the milestone at school entry. 28% males are more likely to be vulnerable or at risk on one or more developmental domains than females at this milestone (16 per cent of females). The children who are missing out at this milestone are more likely to have lower quality early childhood education services and schools in their area.
Existing Solution 1 Funded Three-Year-Old Kindergarten Rejected Lack of equity visible in the process: Non-Australian children and children come from wealthier families still have to pay. Many children miss out not having enough spots to join in.
Existing Solution 2 Early Start Kindergarten Rejected Only a selected group of children have the access Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children (DET, 2019a). Children whose family have had contact with Child Protection (or been referred to Child FIRST) (DET, 2019a).
Existing Solution 3 Koorie Kids Shine at Kindergarten Rejected Accessible for only Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander children
Final Outcome Funded quality early childhood development, care and pre‑primary education for all children in Australia by 2030. To Achieve Minimum diversity in children’s development by the time they entre school.
I hope you learn something new about Australian education system today. Thank you very much for your time..
Australia, let’s work together to ensure that we leave no one behind!
