The 17 Goals for People, for Planet The 17 Goals (Sustainable Development Goals) were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere by 2030 (United Nations, n.d.).
The Project Focus: Goal 4 – Quality Education Ensure Inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunity for all (United Nations, n.d.)
Quality education is something that everyone deserves, but the question is whether everyone is getting it or not. Unfortunately, the bitter reality is that there are gaps in accessing quality education around the globe. According to UN (n.d.), gaps in quality education is visible starting from early childhood education, all the way to higher education levels across the world, leaving 617 million youth worldwide lack basic mathematics and literacy skills (UN, n.d.).
This project focuses on the quality of education in the Australian context. Australia can be identified as one of the wealthiest countries that have been lucky to increasing economic growth for a longer period without any interruptions. The wealth, increasing economic growth may encourage people to trust that Australia has quality education for all, but the research may have something else to show. The SDG Transforming Australia (n.d.), has a different story to what many of us believe. According to SDG Transforming Australia (n.d.), Australia is performing relatively well in education (SDG 4), but some gaps need immediate attention. Australia is failing to provide equitable and inclusive education for all and show clear connections to socio-economic background, remoteness and Indigeneity (SDG Transforming Australia, n.d.). Fast population growth, job demand, climate change, environmental degradation, inequality and marginalisation, and trust issues with government and business were some of the main reasons that have been identified causing low-quality education in Australia (SDG Transforming Australia, n.d.). The Australian government is dedicated to providing quality education for all by 2030. The goals, indicators, and action plans are in place and hoping to achieve a better education system that believes in all Australians and committed to leaving no one behind in education by 2030.
